The Discarded Donor Intestine: A Review of Donor Criteria, Donor Availability and Usage, and Current Efforts to Expand Donor Access
Background: The demand for intestine grafts is increasing. Criteria for intestine donation are the strictest due to its susceptibility to ischemia/reperfusion injury. Offered intestines are underutilized. The purpose of this study was to summarize current donor criteria for intestine organs and their rationale, highlight areas of research to expand the donor pool, and analyze the state of intestinal organ transplantation in regards to donor availability and usage.
