Impact of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Treatment on Resistant Bloodstream Infections in Pediatric Intestinal Failure
Background: Intestinal failure (IF) is characterized by reliance on parenteral nutrition for greater than 60 days due to absent or reduced intestinal function. Patients with IF are at risk for infectious complications including bloodstream infections (BSI) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). SIBO treatment often involves prolonged antibiotic courses. It is unclear if this practice promotes BSI with antibiotic-resistant organisms within this population.
