Protective and Regenerative Effects of IL-22 in Intestinal Transplant Rejection: A Potential Therapeutic Strategy?

Background: Acute cellular rejection (ACR) is a primary cause of graft failure and mortality in intestinal transplant (ITx) recipients, leading to mucosal barrier disruption and organ dysfunction. The IL-22/IL-22BP/IL-22R axis plays a crucial role in epithelial regeneration. This study evaluates the expression of this axis in ITx patients and the regenerative effects of recombinant IL-22 (rIL-22) in an allogeneic ITx rat model.
