An Analysis of The Macrostructure (Cohesion) In Rifat Ilgaz’s Short Story Şeker Kutusu

Rıfat Ilgaz's literary understanding occupies a unique position in Turkish literature, particularly due to his ability to intertwine social criticism with the nuances of daily life. This study analyzes the author’s short story Şeker Kutusu within the framework of text linguistics, with a specific focus on cohesion. The central problem of the study is to reveal how semantic relations and narrative transitions contribute to textual coherence in a structure that develops around a single object. In this context, linguistic markers and macrostructure elements in the story are examined in detail. The research adopts a qualitative method; through textual analysis, semantic patterns of the narrative are identified and interpreted using content analysis. The findings indicate that as the candy box changes hands, its meaning transforms, prompting a critical reflection on concepts such as status, belonging, and sincerity. The story offers a critique of a social structure in which gifts become instrumentalized and relationships become superficial. In this respect, the study not only contributes to textual analysis but also demonstrates the potential of literary texts to serve as sources for sociocultural interpretation.
