A General Vector Control Scheme for Induction Motor Drives

ABSTRACT The performance of vector control (VC) methods for induction motors (IMs) mainly depends on the motor model. To control 3‐phase IMs (3IMs), single‐phase IMs with two different windings (2IMs), and star‐connected 3IMs under an open‐phase fault (FIMs), different VC approaches should be designed due to different dynamic models. In this paper, a novel indirect VC scheme for IM drives, including 3IM, 2IM, and FIM drives, based on variable current PI controllers is proposed. A general α‐β (stationary reference) coordinate model of IMs is presented. This model is utilised to obtain a novel VC method. The proposed VC (PVC) scheme is obtained without major modifications in the classic VC (CVC) structure. In most previous studies in this field, different asymmetrical transformations have been used to transform the asymmetrical form of the machine to a symmetrical form. Nevertheless, the PVC in this paper is based on the conventional transformation matrix (CTM). It has low complexity and better transient performance compared to earlier works. Simulation results of the PVC for 3IM, 2IM and FIM are presented. Moreover, experimental results are carried out considering no‐load and load conditions. The obtained results guarantee the presented formulation's acceptance.
