Influence of orthodontic movement on the alveolar bone crest: villain or ally? – case report

Changes in the buccolingual inclination of lower incisors are frequent during orthodontic treatment. However, when this movement extends beyond the alveolar bone limit, undesirable side effects can occur in the periodontic. Aim: The present clinical case reports alveolar bone remodeling after orthodontic treatment to correct excessive buccal inclination of lower incisors positioned above the anatomical limits of the alveolar process. Case Report: A 26-year-old male patient sought retreatment presenting excessive inclination of lower incisors beyond the alveolar bone limits. Progressive buccal torque was applied to the lower incisors until the inclination was corrected within the limits of the alveolar bone. With correction of the inclination, has and increase in the height of the alveolar bone crest, since the distance from the cementoenamel junction on the buccal and lingual surfaces decreased in all incisors, especially on the buccal surface of the lower right lateral incisor and on the lingual surface of the lower central incisors. Conclusion: Cone-beam computed tomography showed correcting the of the lower incisors inclination within alveolar bone limits that favored the regeneration of the local alveolar bone crest.
