İRLANDA BASININDA III. SELİM DÖNEMİ (1789-1808)
This article analyses the foreign and domestic politics of the Ottoman Empire in the period starting with the accession of Sultan Selim III to the throne and extending until his death in 1808 in the light of the news in the Irish press of the period.Belfast Newsletter, The Dublin Journal, Finn's Leinster Journal, Freemans Journal, The Connaught Journal, Carlow Morning Post, Chute's Western Herald, Dublin Cronicle, The Press and Dublin Evening Post were used for the study. The personality of Selim III, his reforms, the Ottoman-Russian wars of 1787-1792, 1806-1812, Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign and the Ottoman-French rapprochement that followed were analysed in detail. In addition, the internal and external dynamics of the Kabak Mustafa Rebellion, the dethronement and murder of Sultan Selim were evaluated together with the approaches of the newspapers of the period.Although the news sources of Irish newspapers were mostly the newspapers of European states (England, France, Austria, Russia), sometimes the source was directly stated as Istanbul.Accordingly, this article seeks to contribute both to the historiography of the late Ottoman Empire and to a broader understanding of European, particularly Irish, perceptions of the Ottomans at the turn of the nineteenth century. For this reason, the article aims to shed light on both the Ottoman history of the period and the perception of the Ottoman Empire by the European press.
