Transgender representation: a comparative analysis of cultural sensitivity in English and Arabic news headlines in Jordanian media

Media representation of transgender individuals goes beyond reporting – it shapes public perception and reflects societal values. This study examines how transgender issues are framed in Jordanian media by analyzing English and Arabic news headlines from Roya News and The Jordan Times between 2015 and 2023. Using quantitative analysis and discourse examination, the study identifies distinct editorial patterns. Roya News covers transgender issues more frequently, often framing them in terms of legal and social challenges with terms like ‘deportation’ and ‘accused’. In contrast, The Jordan Times integrates transgender topics into broader human rights and cultural discussions, adopting a more globally aware perspective. The study also finds that the term transgender appears more often in the article itself than in headlines, suggesting a strategy to balance audience sensitivities. These differences reflect how media framing both mirrors and influences societal attitudes, with Roya News reinforcing traditional values, while The Jordan Times signals a more inclusive perspective on gender identity. This study highlights the significant role of media in shaping public understanding of marginalized communities.
