Assessment of radiation protection practices among radiologic tenchnologists

Background:Radiologic technologists are routinely exposed to ionizing radiation during diagnostic imaging procedures.Without proper radiation protection measures, prolonged or repeated exposure can pose serious health risks.Ensuring safe work practices is essential to protect both healthcare professionals and patients. This study focuses on evaluating the current level of awareness and adherence to radiation safety protocols among radiologic technologists. Objective:To assess the knowledge, understanding, and implementation of radiation protection practices among radiologic technologists through a structured survey approach. Methodology:A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire consisting of multiplechoice questions. The questionnaire addressed key topics including dose limits, protective equipment, radiation shielding, personal monitoring devices, and the role of radiation safety officers.Data collected from the participants were analyzed to identify awareness levels and areas needing improvement. Results:The findings revealed that most participants had a satisfactory understanding of radiation protection.Around 76.7% correctly identified the primary aim of radiation safety as minimizing exposure to ionizing radiation.About 69.5% accurately selected Sievert as the unit for radiation dose measurement, and 85% were aware of the protective function of lead aprons. However, only 48.3% correctly answered the minimum lead equivalence required. While 79.7% demonstrated knowledge about dosimeters, variations were observed in responses regarding the frequency of equipment inspections and dose limit standards. Conclusion:Although the overall awareness of radiation protection among radiologic technologists was found to be adequate, the study highlights inconsistencies in the practical application of safety measures. This underscores the need for regular training programs, continuous professional development, and strict enforcement of safety protocols to ensure consistent and effective radiation protection in clinical practice.
