From observer to partner

Nigeria's recent admission as a BRICS partner marks a significant milestone in the country's evolving role within the grouping. This development underscores Nigeria's growing importance as a key player in the global economy, particularly in the context of South-South cooperation. This paper examines Nigeria's transition from an observer to a partner in the BRICS, highlighting the opportunities and challenges associated with this new status. It argues that Nigeria's participation in the BRICS offers a platform for the country to diversify its economy, enhance its global influence, and address its development challenges. However, it also noted that Nigeria must address its internal challenges, including infrastructure deficits, corruption, and bureaucratic inefficiencies, to fully benefit from its BRICS partnership. The study was elicited through secondary method of data gathering approach. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for Nigeria to leverage its BRICS membership to achieve its economic development goals and enhance its position in the global economy.
