Combined subcision with platelet rich plasma injection in treatment of post traumatic atrophic scars: a clinical and histopathological evaluation

Background Many therapeutic modalities are used for the treatment of atrophic scars with variable results. Objective To evaluate the efficacy of combined platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and subcision (PRP-S) in the treatment of post-traumatic atrophic scars (PTAS). Patients and methods This prospective clinical trial included 24 patients with PTAS treated with combined PRP-S injection for four sessions with 1 month interval. Skin biopsies were taken before and 3 months after the end of therapy for histopathological evaluation. Results The improvement was mild in five (20.8%) patients, nine (37.5%) patients showed moderate improvement, seven (29.2%) patients showed marked improvement while three (12.5%) patients showed excellent improvement according to physician quartile grading scale. In terms of histopathological evaluation, collagen fibers showed a moderate increase after treatment. Conclusion PRP-S could be considered a safe and effective treatment for PTAS.
