Layered Risk Management for Medical Laboratories: Strategic Integration of Risk Estimation Methods for Enhanced Patient Safety
Background: Modern healthcare relies heavily on the diagnostic services provided by medical laboratories, which furnish crucial information that guides clinical decision-making and significantly impacts patient outcomes. However, the inherent complexity of laboratory operations exposes these facilities to a multitude of potential risks.Inadequate management of these risks can undermine the quality and safety of laboratory services, potentially leading to diagnostic errors and adverse patient events.Consequently, the implementation of robust risk management strategies has become an ethical imperative and an operational necessity for medical laboratories. Methods: This article presents a comprehensive analysis that juxtaposes two widely employed risk estimation methods in the medical laboratory setting: The multiplication approach and the square root of sum of squares (SRSS) technique.Furthermore, the study introduces a layered risk management framework that strategically integrates a diverse array of risk estimation methodologies across multiple analytical tiers.Additionally, the discussion delves into advanced quantitative risk assessment approaches, such as probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), QRA, statistical process control (SPC), and Bayesian statistical methods. Results: While the multiplication and SRSS methods offer practical tools for the initial prioritization of risks, the article emphasizes the limitations of relying solely on a single-method strategy, given the complex-and context-dependent nature of the risks encountered in diverse and resource-constrained medical laboratory settings. The proposed layered risk management framework enables the tailoring of risk analysis and mitigation strategies to the specific characteristics and criticality of the risks at hand, with clear guidance on the selection of appropriate estimation methods. Conclusion:The study underscores the importance of adopting a holistic, context-driven approach to risk management, where the choice of risk estimation method is strategically contextualized and progressively implemented across various analytical levels. This layered approach ultimately enhances patient safety and improves the overall quality of diagnostic services provided by medical laboratories.
