DISFAGIA E SARCOPENIA: UM DESAFIO CONJUNTO PARA A SAÚDE DO IDOSO
Dysphagia and sarcopenia are prevalent conditions in the elderly population which, when combined, characterize sarcopenic dysphagia—a multifactorial syndrome with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. The progressive loss of muscle mass and strength affects not only mobility but also the muscles involved in swallowing, increasing the risk of pulmonary aspiration, malnutrition, and recurrent hospitalizations. This article reviews the relationship between sarcopenia and dysphagia, their pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic methods, and current therapeutic strategies. It emphasizes the importance of early multidisciplinary intervention, focusing on muscle rehabilitation, nutritional support, and comprehensive elderly care.
