A Comparative Study Between International Oil Companies (IOCs) and National Oil Companies (NOCs) in Relation to their Energy Transition Strategies

Abstract The literature suggests that the energy transition is an alternative for oil and gas companies in the face of growing demand for net-zero emissions worldwide. However, research on identifying energy transition strategies in oil-rich African countries is still scarce. Therefore, this study aims to explore the strategies being adopted by 16 oil and gas companies (eight international and eight national, ensuring the presence of African countries) in the context of the energy transition. The study methodology uses a systematic literature review carried out to collect scientific articles. The sample of papers consists of 19 articles. The energy transition in the oil and gas sector is an important process that requires major adjustments in energy supply and consumption. However, the available scientific literature notes that African NOCs are little studied in terms of energy transition strategies, with the majority of studies being on European, South American or Asian NOCs. This study will therefore consider African NOCs or NOCs from underdeveloped countries to help fill this gap.
