Synthesis of Bottlebrush Copolymers Containing Terthiophene and Long Alkyl Chains by Cis-specific Living Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization of Norbornene-type Macromonomers: Effect of Long Alkyl Side Chains toward the Thermal a
Z-Specific (97-98 % cis) syntheses of bottlebrush copolymers (cis-BBCPs) by living ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of exo-N-substituted-norbornene-2,3-dicarboximides (NDI) containing terthiophene (3T) connected to n-dodecyl spacer and NDIs containing long alkyl chains [n-tetradecyl (C14), n-octadecyl (C18), and docosyl (C22)] have been demonstrated by using the (arylimido)vanadium(V)–alkylidene catalyst, V(CHSiMe3)(N-2,6-Cl2C6H3)[OC(CF3)3](PMe3)2, in toluene at 50 °C. Thermal properties in the resultant cis-BBCPs measured by DSC thermograms are affected by the alkyl side chain length as well as the monomer molar ratios charged. The resultant cis-BBCPs exhibited blue emissions through an interpolymer interaction of 3T (especially in films) and the emission properties were not affected by the alkyl side chain lengths, the monomer molar ratios.
