Regional Development Analysis of the Southern Highlands of PapuaNew Guinea: Environment, Energy, Education, and Economy
In this work, the author provides a comprehensive study focusing on the southern highlands Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) from a regional development perspective, examining the intersection of four areas: the environment, education, energy, and the economy. Although the region has abundant natural and anthropogenic assets, it remains the most underdeveloped region in the country. By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, this study analyses key factors associated with underdevelopment, such as deforestation, educational inequality, energy poverty, and the predominance of extractive industries. It combines demographic information, policy analysis, academic literature, and field work. The gaps in development and the interrelationships between sectors are illustrated graphically in the form of charts and diagrams. This paper makes a case for a more integrated, culturally appropriate development model—one that synergizes indigenous knowledge systems with human capital development, economic diversification, and holistic integrated planning. The research also presents a strategic blueprint aimed at augmenting the capacity of local communities through the implementation of renewables, inclusive educational frameworks, and active environmental policy. The results highlight that for sustainable development in the Southern Highlands, there is a need to go beyond technical solutions by integrating community engagement, long-term political investment, and evolving policy frameworks.
