The role of continuing professional development in the formation of critical clinical thinking of a dentist

Background. Continuing professional development is important for dentists in the modern world, ensuring competence and the implementation of advanced methods. The increasing prevalence of oral oncopathologies and stress-induced oral mucosal diseases (OMD) necessitates constant knowledge updates for delivering high-quality care. Objective: to describe key aspects of dentists’ continuing professional development and analyze current problems and their solutions, as discussed at educational events organized by the PO “Association of Dentists of Ukraine” during the first half of 2025. Materials and methods. The content of presentations and discussions from educational events of the PO “Association of Dentists of Ukraine” (February 7, April 10–11, and June 13, 2025) was analyzed, focusing on OMD, oncological awareness, odontopathology, and periodontology. Results. The educational events of the PO “Association of Dentists of Ukraine” served as a platform for discussing modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of major dental diseases. Classifications and etiology of non-carious hard tissue lesions, prevention and treatment of distal occlusion in children, and specifics of managing patients with OMD and long-term splinting of mobile teeth were reviewed. Differential diagnosis and treatment of complicated caries were discussed. Significant attention was given to oral cancer screening, patient pathways in suspected neoplasms, and the interdisciplinary approach. The impact of comorbid conditions on oral health was analyzed. Information on organ-preserving technologies, endodontic microsurgery, and the influence of endodontic treatment on maxillary sinuses was presented. Oral hygiene, legal aspects of practice, and innovations in the continuing professional development system were highlighted. Conclusions. Systematic participation in educational events which are held by the PO “Association of Dentists of Ukraine” allows dentists to update their knowledge on current issues, implement innovations, and adapt to legislative changes. The interdisciplinary approach and exchange of experience are crucial for ensuring high-quality dental care and improving patients’ quality of life.
