MILITARY POLICE OF MATO GROSSO DO SUL-BRAZIL: HISTORICAL EVOLUTION, INSTITUTIONAL ORGANIZATION AND SOCIAL COMMITMENT
n 2025, the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Police (PMMS) will reach the historic milestone of 190 years dedicated to public safety and law enforcement. Its history dates back to the Brazilian Regency period, before the division of the state of Mato Grosso, and it was initially called Capitães-do-Mato. This paper explores the history of the force, highlighting its historical evolution, changes in its institutional organization, its professionalization, and its social commitment. Through qualitative, bibliographic, and documentary analyses, it was possible to describe events of paramount importance at the state level and correlate them with the institution, such as the 1916 Revolution, the Constitutionalist Revolution, the creation of the Territory of Ponta Porã, and the creation of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The conclusion is that the PMMS's trajectory demonstrates its ability to adapt to different historical contexts, its solid performance in meeting the demands of public safety and order, and its ongoing commitment to society.
