Surface chemistry and COVID-19: development of antimicrobial surfaces

The COVID-19 pandemic emphasized the urgent need for effective infection control strategies, particularly on high-touch surfaces. This study explores the application of surface chemistry in the development of antimicrobial materials aimed at deactivating SARS-CoV-2. By reviewing recent experimental research, the paper evaluates materials such as copper and silver nanoparticles, titanium dioxide, and quaternary ammonium compounds for their virucidal efficacy. Findings indicate that chemically engineered surfaces can rapidly reduce viral viability through mechanisms like ion release, oxidative stress, and membrane disruption. Although promising, challenges related to safety, durability, environmental impact, and scalability remain. This research contributes to advancing preventive technologies in public health.
