Treatment of Atypical Femoral Fractures After Long-term Administration of Denosumab
In recent years, denosumab has been increasingly used to treat osteoporosis.Several articles and studies from the literature have concluded that there is likely an association between chronic denosumab administration and the occurrence of atypical femoral fractures.Synthesizing case reports and systematic reviews, this article provides a comprehensive overview of clinical implications and potential preventive measures. The treatment of choice for these fractures is intramedullary fixation and discontinuation of the anti-osteoporotic drug. This narrative review of the literature examines treatment approaches for these fractures, subsequent therapeutic management of patients, and emphasizes the need for increased clinical awareness and proactive strategies to address the complexity of atypical femoral fractures associated with denosumab.
