Blockchain and the metaverse: A dual-tech approach to transforming medical data and patient care

The advancement of the metaverse and the application of blockchain technology in the medical field is probably going to cause a revolution. The concept of the metaverse that enables the integration of physical and digital spaces creates possibilities for the advancement of healthcare services, education of medical professionals, and patients. Blockchain is a secure distributed database for maintaining and sharing of the medical record data without compromising with the data integrity and privacy of patients. For this purpose, this paper focuses on the integration of metaverse and blockchain within the healthcare industry to design a secure and credible system for patient-centric data sharing. It expands on the significant future areas of the use of the metaverse, including virtual consultations, simulation training, and therapeutic approaches that can positively impact patients’ experiences, reach, and affordability. Additionally, the paper discusses how distributed ledger technology known as blockchain can disrupt the storage and protection of medical data. The use of smart contracts through the blockchain can greatly minimize constraints and eliminate extra procedures for fraud. However, the paper also expounds the challenges associated with these technologies, which should be addressed tomorrow, these challenges include; privacy and security, scalability/interoperability/standardization and ethics such as equity and accessibility. This calls for research and cooperation between various fields of study and the formulation and implementation of comprehensive health policies in metaverse and blockchain technology. This paper will try to present the guidelines on how metaverse and blockchain can be adopted in the healthcare system to improve and enhance the delivery of medical services, improve the security of patients’ health records, and bring value for patients by focusing on their needs.
