Improving wind turbine performance in dual-star induction generator systems with fractional-order fuzzy PID control

To enhance the operational efficiency of variable-speed wind turbines (WTs) integrated with dual-star induction generators (DSIGs) within a power grid, this paper introduces a robust hybrid control approach termed the fractional-order fuzzy proportional-integral derivative (FOFPID) adjustment approach. The primary objective of this study is to employ pitch angle control for guiding WTs based on DSIG (WT-DSIG) systems toward optimal power extraction, particularly under adverse weather conditions, while concurrently ensuring the safety of WTs in high-wind regions. This dual-pronged approach not only facilitates the attainment of superior power quality but also enhances the protection mechanisms for wind turbines. The proposed FOFPID regulator is evaluated across a spectrum of wind speed perturbations, encompassing both low and high wind speeds, to assess its efficacy. The results of the analysis unequivocally demonstrate that the hybrid FOFPID regulator outperforms traditional optimal controllers, about response dynamics, overshoot mitigation, and overall performance indices. Furthermore, the developed approach supports adept control over the WT-DSIG system across various wind speed scenarios. This research presents the FOFPID regulator as a potential solution for optimizing the performance of DSIG-WT systems, demonstrating its superiority in handling challenging operating conditions and underscoring its efficacy in achieving enhanced control and protection outcomes.
