Recent developments in magnetic lanthanoid complexes supported by β-diketonate or pyridyl-pyrazolate ligands

Over the last few years, the development of lanthanoid (Ln) ion metal complexes with single molecular magnetic properties have gained noteworthy interest and greater attention. The significant advancements in the field, have largely arisen from the precise selection of appropriate organic ligands and metal centres generating complexes with defined coordination environments that support unique magnetic properties. In this review, we assess the progress of Ln-β-diketonate complexes over the last 5 years. The molecular structure and magnetic characterisation of homo and heterometallic complexes are represented systematically. Following, a critical assessment that evaluates the performance of these systems and potential future designs for enhanced magnetic behaviour. As β-diketones can be used to synthesise pyrazoles, we present the related magnetic Ln complexes based on pyridyl derivatives. • A review of recent developments (∼5 yrs) in magnetic lanthanoid β-diketonate complexes. • Generating magneto–structural relationships is still a key area of interest. • High performance complexes as multifunctional materials and alternative spin topologies. • Magnetic lanthanoid pyridyl-pyrazolate complexes also presented.
