Study of the Flexural Property of Beam Strengthened by Textile‐Reinforced Concrete

Textile‐reinforced concrete (TRC), known for its excellent tensile and flexural properties, shows great potential for enhancing the bending performance of concrete beams. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the flexural performance and bending resistance of concrete beams reinforced by TRC at the bottom surface. Two key reinforcement factors, including the surface treatment methods and the number of reinforcement layers, were considered in this study. The interface treatment methods included roughening the surface and inserting steel bars. One to four reinforcement layers were used. This study found that TRC layers can delay the crack initiation and propagation, and thus, significantly improve the bending resistance of concrete beams. In addition, with the improvement of bending resistance, higher shear stress was induced in the bonding interface between the beam and reinforcement layers. As such, surface treatment is necessary and important to improve bonding capability at the interface to resist shear stress. More TRC reinforcement layers were useful to improve the antibending properties of the concrete beam. Furthermore, theoretical calculations were conducted to analyze the interface shear stress, as well as the crack load, yielding load, and ultimate load. The predicted values obtained using the proposed analytical formulas show remarkable agreement with the experimental results, demonstrating that these formulas can be effectively used to predict the flexural performance of TRC‐strengthened concrete beams.
