Assessment plays a key role in the process of language teaching and learning. One significant section of language testing is the results of the tests. The positive or negative results of the test are related to washback. In the current paper, the writer aims to review the conceptual underpinnings of washback in general and revisit some major landmark research reports on washback of English testing in particular worldwide and Vietnam. Washback is divided into two main categories: positive and negative washback. Hence, washback is considered a beneficial means to consider the results of the test influences on teacher and learner behavior in the classroom.
