Comparative Evaluation of the Effect of Various Cavity Disinfectants on Shear Bond Strength of Composite Resin to Dentin
A BSTRACT Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the shear bond strength (SBS) of different disinfecting agents and compare the effects of various disinfecting materials on the bond strength of resin composite in extracted human permanent molar teeth. Materials and Methods: Ninety samples of extracted permanent molars were chosen and analyzed. They were split up into six groups ( n = 15) based on the disinfection material used. Group I – control group, Group II – Chlorhexidine 2%, Group III – Aloe barbadensis miller (Aloe vera), Group IV – Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi), Group V – Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi), and Group VI – Ozonated water. SBS in MPa for each group was evaluated using a universal testing machine, and a stereomicroscope was used to observe the gap creation at the dentin-restoration interface. Results: The highest bond strength was seen in the CHX group and the least in the saline group (CHX > Ozonated water > Aloe Vera > Tulsi > Guduchi > Saline). Conclusion: Herbal disinfectants can be used as a substitute since they are more widely available, reasonably priced, culturally acceptable, and have fewer adverse effects. The study also suggests that ozone might be a useful substitute for chlorhexidine.
