Application of Piezoelectric Materials to Active Control of Stability in Rotating Annular Sandwich Plates with a Porous Nanocomposite Core
This paper presents a study on the application of piezoelectric sensor/actuator layers to actively control the stability of annular sandwich plates subjected to rotating motion and uniform compressive loading. The rotating annular sandwich plate with different edge conditions is analyzed while its face sheets are made from piezoelectric sensor/actuator materials. Also, the core of the annular sandwich plate is made of a porosity-dependent aluminum reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs). The metal-based foam core of the annular sandwich plate is composed of six layers with the same thickness, where each of them has different values of porosity. The nonlinear equilibrium equations are extracted utilizing the Reissner–Mindlin shear deformation theory and the von-Kármán type of nonlinearity. The linear equations of stability are also extracted by applying the adjacent equilibrium criterion. The coupled system of stability equations is separated and then solved for different types of boundary conditions by implementing the generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) technique. Novel numerical examples are provided to explore the influences of piezoelectric parameters, rotating speed and material/geometrical characteristics on the stability of rotating annular sandwich plates.
