Singapore Building Carbon Calculator: A Localized Approach for Carbon Assessment in the Built Environment
This paper examines the pivotal role of building sustainability in driving decarbonization efforts across various industries in Singapore. Recognizing that buildings are foundational to economic activity, the research emphasizes the need for enhanced awareness and actionable tools to measure carbon emissions effectively. Central to this discussion is the introduction of an innovative carbon calculator specifically designed for Singapore’s context. This calculator, equipped with a localized carbon database, empowers developers, architects, engineers and builders to evaluate and minimize the carbon footprint, both embodied and operational, of building projects through transparent insights into the environmental impacts of design choices. By facilitating informed decision-making, the tool encourages the selection of low-carbon materials and sustainable construction practices that align with both aesthetic aspirations and long-term decarbonization goals. The tool can also enable policymakers to establish and review carbon reference values across different building typologies, supporting future calibration of carbon baselines through the BCA Green Mark Whole Life Carbon framework. Ultimately, the findings highlight the calculator’s potential to catalyze collaboration across sectors, fostering a culture of sustainability that can significantly contribute to Singapore’s climate action initiatives and global carbon reduction targets.
