Study of Anomalous Rhythms Using Metric Modulation - Focusing on the Drum Rhythm with a 3-Grouping Structure in Odmeter-
This study explores various structural applications of drum rhythms utilizing a metric modulation technique based on groupings of three sixteenth notes. The primary objective is to propose practical methods for applying irregular rhythmic structures beyond conventional and symmetrical patterns across performance, arrangement, and music production contexts. The methodology involves selecting drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, renowned for his creative use of metric modulation in odd meter environments, and analyzing his playing from the perspective of rhythmic grouping structures. The analysis reveals that Colaiuta employed a total of eight distinct groupings based on three sixteenth-note lengths.Furthermore, by emphasizing the starting point of each group through accent techniques on the hi-hat and snare drum, he enabled the listener to perceive the three-note groupings. This approach, when juxtaposed against a 7/8 time signature where each beat consists of two sixteenth notes, generates a polyrhythmic or time-displaced feel that can be perceived as a metric modulation effect. These techniques demonstrate practical applicability in extending beyond standard rhythmic conventions and offer valuable strategies for musicians and producers seeking to incorporate advanced metric modulation techniques into their work.
