A Study on the Development of Chinese Pipa Art Against the Background of East-West Musical Integration Based on CiteSpace

Against the backdrop of globalization and the rise of the New Music concept, the traditional Chinese instrument, the pipa, is encountering unprecedented opportunities and challenges. However, existing research primarily focuses on micro-level analyses of pipa performance techniques or individual musical pieces, lacking a macro-level perspective to understand its overall developmental trajectory and multidimensional integration mechanisms. To address this gap, this study utilizes the keywords New Music, pipa, and China to systematically review a total of 483 academic publications, both domestic and international, published between 2005 and 2024, sourced from the CNKI database and analyzed using the bibliometric visualization tool CiteSpace. The research process includes: (1) Literature retrieval and export (after an initial screening of 567 records from 2000 to 2024, 483 core articles remained.through EndNote deduplication and manual selection); (2) Bibliometric visualization analysis (including temporal distribution, author and institutional collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence and clustering, and burst keyword detection); (3) Micro-level score analysis (focusing on Liu Tianhua's Xulai and Gewuyin from the 1920s to 1930s, with emphasis on three compositional patterns: motif development, recapitulation-variation, and harmonic vocabulary). The results indicate that publication trends can be divided into four phases: a nascent stage (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009), a rapid growth stage (2010-2013), a stable maturity stage (2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018)(2019), and a structural adjustment and convergence stage (2020)(2021)(2022)(2023)(2024).The core collaboration network includes institutions such as the China Conservatory of Music and its Department of National Music, as well as representative scholars like Li Bo and Li Nan.Through keyword clustering analysis, seven major research themes were identified, including performance techniques and repertoire analysis, creative features, and pedagogical training.Burst keyword analysis further revealed evolving research frontiers such as "creative features" (2011)(2012)(2013)(2014) and "performance style" (from 2015 onward). This study attempts to construct a fundamental knowledge map of pipa development within the context of New Music by integrating macro-level bibliometric analysis with micro-level score analysis. It provides a useful reference and inspiration for future cross-cultural comparisons, methodological innovations, and pedagogical practice in the revitalization and sustainable development of traditional Chinese instrumental music.
