Images of Russian monarchy in the memoirs of 1950–1960s: comprehension in Soviet and Post-soviet historiography

In the article are analyzed approaches to understanding the phenomenon of memoirs of the "Khrushchev thaw" and early "Era of Stagnation" in Russian historiography. Authors of which memoirs were eyewitnesses of the socio-political processes in the Russian Empire that took place before 1917. These memoirs are an important set of sources for studying the historical images of the institutions of the Russian Empire in the context of the transformation of the system of socio-cultural institutions of historical memory in the USSR in the period from 1953 to 1970. Special attention is paid to the consideration of the most studied subjects of this problematic field in Soviet and post-Soviet historiography, related to the memoir legacy of the publicist V. V. Shulgin and the soviet statesman K. E. Voroshilov. The article also examines approaches to studying the "soldier's memoirs" of participants in the First World War. The article also suggests the most promising research issues for further study related to the study of images of power in the memoir literature of the 1950s – 1960s. Among such issues are: the relationship between the interest of memoirists in the factor of "public masses" and "the role of the individual in history"; the conceptual, terminological and symbolic apparatus that the authors of memoirs used when describing the institution of the Russian monarchy; the context of the memoir genre under censorship control; the role of memoir authors in the development of new ideological trends within the framework of the state ideology of the USSR and opposition movements; authors of memoir publications as representatives of the generation of the last eyewitnesses of the events of the history of pre-revolutionary Russia; the revision of commemorative practices in relation to a number of military and political events at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The key problem is 1950–1960s as a transitional period in the revision of the legacy of the late Russian Empire.

Abstract
