Specific features of imagological representation in Hannah Cowley's dramatic works: "The Belle's Stratagem" and "A Day in Turkey; or, the Russian Slaves"

The article deals with the national text in the most representative plays "The Belle's Stratagem" (1780) and "A Day in Turkey; or, the Russian Slaves" (1791) by Hannah Cowley, an outstanding English dramatic author of the XVIII century. The topicality of the research is caused by an urgent necessity to study the 18th century English female drama as an entity, including the authors' strategies of representing the national. The goal of the paper is to reveal the ways of construction of national images in the above mentioned plays by Hannah Cowley. The article considers the use of the strategy of imagological confrontation with the national "Other", primarily French, to create the national image of England in the comedy "Belle's Stratagem", and represents the originality of the multinational imagological dialogue in the drama "A Day in Turkey, or the Russian Slaves" in which the opposition "West-East" is implemented and the positive image of Russia is brought to the forefront. Special attention is paid to the characteristic of Hannah Cowley's female images not only expressing the feminist discourse of her works, but also being embodiments of ethnotypical properties of various nations and representing the imagery of England, Italy, and Russia. In addition, in analyzing the comedy "Belle's Stratagem" special emphasis is placed on satirical aspects of depicting Anglo-French cultural interaction, and when reviewing the drama "A Day in Turkey; or, Russian Slaves" it is focused on the dialogue of national representations in the framework of political discourse based on the national images of Russia, France and Turkey. The features of Cowley's drama found in the analysis of the above mentioned plays, can contribute to a deeper understanding of her work, and the materials of the study can be used in the study of English literature of the 18th century and the history of foreign literature and special courses, as well as for further research on this topic.
