On the question of the time when Ammianus Marcellinus completed his work
Introduction. One of the problems in studying the work of the late Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus (c. 330 – c. 400) is to determine the time when he completed his work «Res Gestae» («Acts») – the most important source on the history of the Late Roman Empire in the 350–370-s. O. Seeck proposed a way to solve it by studying the omissions of Ammianus Marcellinus about some of the events of that time, which is used in the study of his work up to the present. Results. The traditional conclusion about the time of completion of the work on «Res Gestae» is based on the mention by Ammianus Marcellinus of the temple of the Serapeum in Alexandria (XXII, 15.12–13), destroyed by Christians in 391 A.D., which allowed most authors to date the completion of the work beyond the end of the 380-s. – beginning of the 390-s. A.D. Discussion of the results. Other approaches extend the dating up to 394 A.D., when Emperor Theodosius I, who died in January 395 A.D., was named by Ammianus as the ruler (XXIX, 6.15). According to estimates by A. Cameron, Ammianus completed his work a little earlier, before the death of Emperor Valentinian II (May 15, 392), because he was afraid to talk about some events from his reign. Conclusion. The author bases the dating theory on the words of Ammianus Marcellinus about Richomeres, a high-ranking frank in the Roman service, whose death in the winter of 393–394 A.D. was not mentioned by him. This makes it possible to determine the completion date of "Res Gestae" in the time period from 390/391 A.D. till to 394 A.D.
