Specific features of small belt overlays in the Mazunino and Kara-Abyz archaeological cultures
Among the finds in the graves of the Kara-Abyz culture, small belt overlays with faceting and cutouts are sometimes found. They are compared with similar "Mazunino" ones, and are used in the system of evidence of the origin of the Mazunino culture from the Kara-Abyz. But the chronology of these overlays has not previously been the subject of special consideration. The compilation of a complete catalogue of finds showed that the overlays in the Mazunino and Kara-Abyz cultures have typological differences. An essential feature that distinguishes Kara-Abyz overlays from Mazunino ones is the shape of the cutouts. On the Mazunin overlays, the cutouts separating the ends from the center are triangular in shape. The Kara-Abyz overlays have rectangular cutouts that form a crossbar in the shape of the letter "T" in the upper and lower parts of the overlay, which is not found in typical Mazunino complexes. In the Kara-Abyz culture this is the only variant of such overlays; in the Mazunino culture the typological diversity is much wider. Only three complexes provide a clear chronology: with a fibula with enamel, 2nd half of the 2nd – beginning of the 3rd century (Tarasovo, grave 36, Mazunino culture), and with fibulae Almgren-156, 4 variants according to A. K. Ambrose, 1st half of the 3rd century AD (Oshki, grave 1, Azelino culture, Okhlebinino, grave 485, Kara-Abyz culture), i. e. the variants are synchronous with each other. This does not allow us to confidently assert the origin of one variant from another. However, the diversity of forms and chronological dynamics allow us to consider the Mazunino culture as the source of the tradition of such overlays, and in the Kara-Abyz environment they are borrowings. The typological features of the Kara-Abyz overlays allow us to identify the finds from Podvyaz'e, grave 24 (Nizhny Novgorod Region) as originating specifically from the Kara-Abyz area, and to link their penetration to the west of the Volga with a wave of other Kara-Abyz finds, represented by characteristic overlays in the form of 'griffin heads'. III в. К. III в. н. э.
