Shared Panic Attacks in a Family: A Case Study of Mismanagement in Bipolar Spectrum Disorder and Generational Trauma
Psychiatric diseases, including panic attacks and bipolar disorder, may arise from the intricate interaction of genetic predisposition, familial relationships, and environmental stressors. The concurrent manifestation of panic attacks within a family is a rare occurrence. This case study investigates a 16-year-old male diagnosed with bipolar disorder, profoundly affected by familial psychiatric issues, notably his mother's persistent history of panic attacks. The patient's condition was further exacerbated by inappropriate psychopharmacological treatment and engagement in alcohol misuse. This study underscores the critical role of accurate diagnosis, tailored treatment, and family-centered mental health interventions in managing adolescent psychiatric conditions.Managing panic attacks in a patient within the bipolar spectrum is crucial, as mismanagement may lead to symptom exacerbation.Notably, excessive empathy toward psychiatric symptoms may inadvertently worsen them.
