Energy-Efficient Ozonation Prototype for Household Water Disinfection

This study presents the development of an energy-efficient ozonation prototype designed for household water disinfection and scale reduction. The prototype employs a corona discharge ozone generator with a high-voltage flyback transformer and needle-plane electrode configuration. Experiments were conducted using water volumes of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{5 0} \boldsymbol{,} \mathbf{1 0 0}$</tex>, and 150 liters, with an ozone dosage of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$400 \text{mg} / \mathrm{h}$</tex> for 10 and 30 minutes. Ozone was injected into water via a Venturi injector to ensure uniform mixing. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in electrical conductivity from <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$5.80-5.81 ~\mathrm{S} / \mathrm{m}$</tex> to <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.95- 0.97 ~\mathrm{S} / \mathrm{m}, \text{pH}$</tex> improvement from 5.80 to 6.64, and complete elimination of coliform bacteria within 30 minutes. The system operates at low power consumption (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.5-40 ~\mathrm{W}$</tex>) and offers a projected return on investment within 23 months. These findings suggest that the prototype is suitable for household and small-scale industrial use, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical disinfection methods [1]–[3].

Abstract

This study presents the development of an energy-efficient ozonation prototype designed for household water disinfection and scale reduction. The prototype employs a corona discharge ozone generator with a high-voltage flyback transformer and needle-plane electrode configuration. Experiments were conducted using water volumes of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{5 0} \boldsymbol{,} \mathbf{1 0 0}$</tex>, and 150 liters, with an ozone dosage of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$400 \text{mg} / \mathrm{h}$</tex> for 10 and 30 minutes. Ozone was injected into water via a Venturi injector to ensure uniform mixing. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in electrical conductivity from <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$5.80-5.81 ~\mathrm{S} / \mathrm{m}$</tex> to <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.95- 0.97 ~\mathrm{S} / \mathrm{m}, \text{pH}$</tex> improvement from 5.80 to 6.64, and complete elimination of coliform bacteria within 30 minutes. The system operates at low power consumption (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.5-40 ~\mathrm{W}$</tex>) and offers a projected return on investment within 23 months. These findings suggest that the prototype is suitable for household and small-scale industrial use, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical disinfection methods [1]–[3].
