A Modelling Procedure for Generating Carving Effects on 3D Surfaces
In this paper, a geometry design procedure is presented to add fine surface structures on 3D models. To accomplish this goal, the proposed method assembles voxelization, distance field computation, unsupervised training, and texture mapping to form a carving pipeline. In the pipeline, the target model is digitalized and represented as a distance field at first. Then, its surface is textured with a selected pattern. At the following stage, engraved carving, embossed carving, and openwork effects are carried out on the target model by removing or preserving voxels based on the pattern. Hence, fine and complex geometric details are added on the model's surface.
