An Improved Multi-Modal Medical Image Fusion Technique Using Discrete Wavelet Transform and Method Noise Based Median Filter
In image processing, “image fusion” refers to the process of merging the characteristics and specifications of many images into a single, more complete one. Multi-modal medical image fusion is one major category of image fusion. It involves fusion of medical images obtained from different modalities. In this paper, the modalities used are computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study (M3IF-DWT) aims to construct a multi modal medical image approach that combines Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and median filter with MRI and CT images in a manner that maximizes the information content in the fused image. M3IF-DWT applies DWT on input CT image and MRI image. The wavelet coefficients are fused using average and maximum operations. Later the results are improved using method noise with median filter. This operation is implemented as post-processing operation. This improves the performance of standard DWT method and improves the overall visual and parametric quality of fusion results than many compared methods.
