Understanding Engineering Students' Sentiments, Proficiency, and Challenges in Programming Education: Insights for Skill Development and Curriculum Improvement

This study explores the perceptions of engineering students toward programming education, focusing on their self-assessed proficiency, challenges faced, and the impact of programming on problem-solving skills. Using qualitative methods and advanced computational tools, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) sentiment analysis and word count modeling, the study investigates students’ attitudes toward programming, their proficiency levels, and how programming education influences their problem-solving abilities. Overall, students view computer programming positively, with a significant majority recognizing its importance for skill development and career readiness. However, they face challenges in understanding programming concepts and completing hands-on exercises. While programming enhances problem-solving skills, its complexity often requires additional support from instructors. The study recommends a student-centered approach with practical applications, structured resources, and project-based learning to better align programming education with academic and industry needs.
