Cold Photons and the Thermodynamics of Solar Energy Conversion: Unlocking Efficiency through Spectrum Shifting
The concept of cold photons-lower-energy photons generated through spectrum-shifting processes like down-conversion and down-shifting-offers a compelling pathway for improving photovoltaic (PV) efficiency. By reducing thermal losses and optimizing spectral management, cold photons can enable solar cells to approach their thermodynamic efficiency limits. This presentation explores the theoretical and practical implications of cold photon technologies for PV systems, including improved thermal management, enhanced light trapping, and tailored spectral optimization. Thermodynamic principles reveal that cold photon emission can be tailored to reduce entropy, trading otherwise wasted energy for efficiency gains. This talk will also provide an overview of the fundamental thermodynamic principles involved, aiming to revive the field of spectral shifting, spark new ideas and inspire innovative approaches to solar energy research and technology development.
