Modelling the voltage distribution on a chain of insulators using OrCAD. A new approach in teaching electrical engineering

Teaching electrical engineering with the help of simulation packages is essential nowadays to examine the circuit operation. This paper focuses on modelling the voltage distribution on a chain of insulators used in high voltage operated electric circuits, to appreciate the integrity of the insulation and the stress to which the elements in the chain are subjected. Also, methods of improving the distribution of the potential along the chain will be highlighted, to achieve an optimal demand for its elements. We simulate the equivalent electric circuit using OrCAD and assess the percentage voltage distribution along the chain of insulators and the voltage drop on each chain element. Finally, we compare the simulation results with those provided by known theoretical equations.
