Interactive Online Course Delivery with H5P Integration
Online learning is the modern version of distance learning. Driven by the readily available and easily accessible digital technology and the necessity to deliver classes online during the recent pandemic, it has surpassed previous forms of distance learning in its popularity and impact to become the new normal in education in many parts of the world. Apart from technological and environmental factors, effective online course delivery relies on appropriate instructional design and good pedagogical practices to engage and motivate students. This paper describes an interactive approach of online course delivery with H5P integration, a plugin with enriched HTML 5 content to existing lecture videos that enables interactions between the instructor and students and among students. The effectiveness of this approach was evaluated with student quiz scores in two undergraduate linguistics courses delivered face-to-face in a classroom and asynchronous online respectively. While the quiz scores of the latter were slightly lower, no statistically significant difference was found, indicating the asynchronous online class with H5P integration produced similar learning outcomes.
