High-Efficiency Triple-Junction Solar Cell Design using CySi1-x-ySnx Alloys on Low-Cost substrates

The demand for renewable energy solutions has driven significant advancements in photovoltaic (PV) technologies, with silicon-based solar cells dominating the global market due to their efficiency and scalability. This study explores the development of a novel material system, C-Si-Sn, designed to enhance the performance of triple-junction solar cells. High-efficiency solar cells with reduced production costs are achievable by leveraging the unique properties of this ternary alloy on cost-effective metallurgical-grade silicon substrates. For the design of these structures, an optimization of bandgap engineering of C-Si-Sn for improved light absorption is the key to the design of innovative device architectures. The results provide insights into the potential of C-Si-Sn as a competitive material system for next-generation silicon-based PV technologies, bridging the gap between high efficiency and affordability.
