The Effect of CdSe Quantum Dots on the Efficiency of Si Solar Cell: A Hands-on, Project-based Learning

This study demonstrates the effect of cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots on silicon solar cells to assess improvement in efficiency under both ultraviolet (UV) and visible light. Results reveal that quantum dot coating enhances solar cell efficiency under UV light by converting high energy UV photons into visible light. Results also show smaller QDs enhanced efficiency gains under UV light. In contrast, a decrease in efficiency is observed under visible light, likely due to greater optical loss. Through varying quantum dots’ sizes, the study demonstrates how bandgap tuning optimizes spectral absorption and improves energy efficiency in specific conditions. Students' reflections indicate that this Project-based Learning (PBL) engaged students in a hands-on and real-world challenge. This project allowed students to foster technical skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. This hands-on learning allowed students to bridge theoretical concepts and real-world applications within the energy and semiconductor fields.
