Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging on Utility Loads
Calculation of expected EV charging loads and the timing of EV charging shows that within at most 5 years, off-peak nighttime charging will worsen peaks and ramp rates in utility load profiles. Switching to off-peak rates during high solar insolation hours not only addresses issues such as solar curtailment but also provides user incentives to use off-peak daytime charging beyond economic incentives. Furthermore, in addition to providing strong user incentives, increasing off-peak charging at work addresses barriers to EV adoption among population segments who are presently less able to benefit from electric vehicles.
