Multiphysics analysis of a coke dry quenching furnace: A study on fluid dynamics and heat transfer

Dry quenching of coke involves cooling red-hot coke using an inert gas, offering advantages such as energy savings, environmental protection, and improved coke quality. The flow characteristics of the gas inside a dry quenching furnace significantly affect the quality of the quenched coke and the performance of the CDQ furnace. This paper establishes a mathematical model for the coke quenching process of a 140 t/h dry quenching furnace. Using the commercial software ANSYS Fluent, the gas flow field, gas pressure field, and temperature distribution in the CDQ furnace are studied under different operating parameters of gas inlet velocity and pressure. The analysis reveals that a decrease in the gas inlet velocity results in reduced gas velocity and pressure and reduced convective heat transfer. When the gas inlet temperature is reduced from 120 °C to 80 °C, the gas outlet temperature reduces from 874 °C to 867 °C, and the lowest temperature of the discharged coke reduces from 196 °C to 159.3 °C. The gas velocity decreases, while its pressure increases. These findings can be used to optimize the performance of the coke dry quenching furnace. • Mathematical model of coke quenching process in a 140 t/h CDQ furnace. • Gas flow, pressure, and temperature analyzed under varying inlet conditions. • Findings reveal the relationship between gas velocity, pressure, and coke temperature.
