REFLEXOS DO REGIME DITATORIAL DE 1964 A 1985 NA ATUAL ESTRUTURA POLICIAL BRASILEIRA: UM LEGADO ULTRAJANTE E DESAFIADOR ÀS EXPRESSÕES DA QUESTÃO SOCIAL E AOS DIREITOS HUMANOS
The reopening of democracy in the 1980s did not completely eliminate the ideals imposed by the civil-military dictatorship that took place in Brazil between 1964 and 1985. There are traces left by the dictatorial regime on the public security forces, since the ideology of the enemy that must be eliminated in order to maintain order and social control was incorporated into them. The 1988 Constitution of the Republic laid the foundations for public security structures organized by the dictatorship. The Military Police consolidated its hegemony over the Civil Police in terms of training, weaponry, manpower and visibility, the latter being linked to the investigative nature attributed to it during the dictatorship. Police violence, manifested in various forms, combined with the legacy of inequality and prejudice in Brazilian society, leads to serious violations of human rights and expressions of the Social Question. The general aim of this research was to see what effects the civilian military dictatorship had on the Brazilian police. The method used was a literature review, combined with a qualitative approach and a documentary/exploratory search. It was found that there is a need to re-evaluate the standards adopted for public security, in order to prevent the human rights of Brazilians from being harmed by police officers, who should cherish being their guarantors.
