SMART WEARABLE DEVICES FOR NIGERIAN CONSTRUCTION HEALTH AND SAFETY: AWARENESS AND USAGE FROM STAKEHOLDERS’ PERSPECTIVE

The usage of Smart Wearable Devices has gained popularity in health sector for monitoring human health and safety. Considering benefits attached to the use of these devices, this study assessed the extent of the awareness and usage of these devices among construction stakeholders for health and safety. This study employs a quantitative research approach using a well-structured questionnaire that was distributed among construction stakeholders, including Project Managers, Project Supervisors, Site Managers, and Health and Safety Officers on forty-three (43) commercial building construction sites in Lagos state. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that stakeholder’s awareness of these gadgets in the construction industry was low and the few smart wearable devices known to these stakeholders are not known for construction safety purposes despite their safety benefits. The study recommends for the use of the devices to minimize hazards on construction sites in Nigeria, and the construction stakeholders collaborate with the government on implementation of formulated policies to enhance its usage with the government creating an enabling environment with internet connectivity.
