Measuring the Chern-Simons invariant in quantum gases
The authors experimentally measure the Chern-Simons invariant by quenching a two-dimensional optical Raman lattice with 1/2 spin in ultracold atoms, using Bloch state tomography to extract the Berry curvature and Berry connection. By integrating their product, they obtain Chern-Simons invariants near \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1 and 0, matching theoretical predictions.
