Alcohol ban and Shifting Bonds: Social and Economic Change in Madhepura

In 2016, Nitesh kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, implemented a complete prohibition on alcohol through "The Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016" to address social problems which includes domestic violence and public health concerns and so on.This article explores the effects of the ban in Madhepura, a rural, flood-affected district in northern Bihar. The prohibition led to a decrease in family violence and caused households to reallocate their spending toward necessities, thereby gradually reinforcing family relationships. On the other hand, it resulted in the formation of an illegal alcohol market, reduced communal relationships, and health concerns caused by the consumption of poisonous and illicit alcohol. The paper explores how the program impacted the social and economic environment of Madhepura, employing sociological terms such as social control, deviance, social capital, and labeling theory.Evidence from research and local perspectives shows mixed results having advancements for some groups and difficulties for others.Critics point out shortcomings in enforcement and unintended negative effects, recommending alternatives such as education or taxation.A more delicate strategy that integrates stringent enforcement with community driven initiatives may more effectively address the particular challenges faced by Madhepura.
